Information over the Beauceron

Before you buy a dog

  • What is your impression of the environment and the breeder?
  • Does the breeder keep the mother and the puppies together?
  • How is the breeder treating you as a potential buyer and do you feel comfortable?
  • Does the breeder take good care of the puppies or is he just thinking of the profit he can make?
  • Does the breeder offer you support after buying a puppy?
  • How are the characters and the socialization of the parents and are the HD tested?
  • Are not the dogs and the puppies kept in a kennel.
  • Be sure that the puppies have met people and are not shy towards people.
  • Do not buy a puppy out of pity for his circumstances if these are bad.
  • Perform a little test to see how the puppies react to noise ( e.g. clap your hand, or shake your keys ).

After you bought a dog

  • Some literature regarding the breed will be helpful.
  • Take a holiday to take care of the puppy (he is just separated from his parents).
  • The education starts directly the first day. The Beauceron is not a dog for starters, and especially not the male ones.
  • Start house training and get the puppy adjusted to wearing a collar and a leash.
  • Train yourself in being consistent, because the Beauceron will take over leadership if there is no clear order.
  • Start attending a puppy course in an early stage and do also with socialising.
  • Start the environmental socialising slowly. The guideline herewith is: safetiness. Never comfort the puppy in case he shows fear! Just keep quiet.
  • Practice looking at teeth and in the ears. Start this practice in an early stage and do the same with training submissiveness.
  • Introduce the puppy to your veterinarian, even when the puppy looks healthy.

The puppy's education in the house

  • If you bring the puppy home from the breeder take him at your lap.
  • In the future, a puppy which has been in a car with the breeder, will not likely suffer from car sickness.
  • Once at home, give the puppy a chance to explore the new environment.
  • Bring the puppy outside the house directly after he slept, had food or played.
  • A Beauceron feels most comfortable close to his family.
  • It is not wise to keep a Beauceron in an outdoor kennel all the time!
  • Never buy a puppy which was brought up in an outdoor kennel.
  • Never let the puppy walk any stairs till the age of 9 months.
  • Prevent a young dog from jumping in and out the car. This can harm the shoulder joint.
  • Start the puppy getting adjusted to his new environment after a few days.
  • Attend a fitting puppy course for the so much-needed socialisation towards other dogs.
  • Take at least a companion dog examination with the dog.
  • It should be wise to give the dog a real task.

The Beauceron and children

According to a lot of breed descriptions is the Beauceron a real friend of children, this in spite of his impressive measurements. It is a dog that takes care of a hurt with great tenderness and love. To achieve this we have to be patient, because the Beauceron is a late-developer and due to this he also reaches adulthood later then other breeds. A young Beauceron can be very wild when he is playing and he does realise his strength. Once adult he becomes quieter and not quickly disturbed by children. A Beauceron showing aggression towards children is badly socialised or brought up the wrong way. For a lot of children a dog is the best companion and playmate and for both it will be difficult to stick to the rules made up by us, 'the pack leaders'. Most children would like it to walk the dog, but never let them to it alone!! It is irresponsible, even with a small dog , to send the children out to walk him if we do not have our mind to it. Children can encounter dangerous situations in which even adults do not know how to react. One can wonder if a dog is the animal for people who let their children handle the dog all the time. Especially when one reads in the papers about the accidents, which occur with dogs, some people should become to the awareness that the problem 'dangerous dog' is spitefully enough mostly to be found at the other side of the leash.

Though, if a puppy comes into the house, both the children and the dog have to be educated. All children like puppies and they like it the most cuddling and carrying around the puppy all the time. So this is where the education starts. You have to make clear to your children, that a dog is no toy. He needs his sleep and he likes to enjoy his meal in peace. Children should not play with so-called pull games with a dog. Mostly the dog masters them in strength. However, a dog must learn that he does not have to defend his food and his toys till the end. With dogs that are extremely aggressive while eating it will take a lot of patience to teach him otherwise. Towards strangers the Beauceron has, more then other breeds, a reserved attitude. This means he has to learn also, that strange children come to visit and have to be accepted. In some dog schools children are valued guests, because they can learn from what they see and hear. Botch children and dogs needs to repeat things a thousand times, but our effort will be awarded. And once the Beauceron is adult, the child will have a friend for live!!

A general rule:
Never leave a dog, does matter from what breed, alone with children!

Feeding the dog

Raw food which comply fully to biological demands.

This is the way I started an while ago to feed my dogs. I can assure you that the dogs are doing very well on this food. Their coat is shiny, they have a good smelling breath, clean teeth and they digest it better. You can find ideas and initiatives on:

Good dog nutrition

I gave you this just as a guideline and to tell you how I feed my dogs. Nobody should see this as the absolute right and only method for feeding.

Delicious oxtail

I don't divide!

The Beauceron is a large breed, so we keep him on two meals a day to prevent a torsion of the stomach.

To close this chapter: some breeders and dog owners are convinced, that it is not possible to feed a puppy to much. I do not agree with this, especially not if one realises that a Beauceron is a rapidly growing breed, which should be at his adult height already with 9 to 11 months of age. However, it can take two or three years before he is fully proportioned. My opinion is, that if one feeds a young dog too much, that one can expect bone problems. Overall a young, growing Beauceron does not look very attractive in my eyes. During his growing period a Beauceron looks if no part of his body belongs to any other part. There are a lot of photographs of young Beaucerons, which affirm this.

Vaccination

  • At 6 weeks parvovirosis and distemper
  • At 9 weeks parvovirosis and leptospirosis
  • At 12 weeks parvovirosis, distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis and kennel-cough
  • With 12 months of rabies and repetition of all vaccinations

In case you are attending a dog school, you have to be able to show prove of rabies vaccination.
